Suffering a brain injury is a life changing event

Suffering a brain injury is a life-changing event, not only for the person themselves but also for all of the family, both close and extended.

The type of symptoms and effects on the person’s life is dependent on the extent of the brain injury and which area of the brain is affected.

Generally, we talk about the left side of the brain, which controls speech, reading and writing, whereas the right side looks after visual memory, drawing and music.

Our brain has four parts;

  1. The frontal lobe is where we think, plan, and control emotions.
  2. The temporal lobe forms new memories and categorises objects and puts things into order.
  3. The parietal lobe deals with visual recognition, like reading and knowing if you are standing or lying down.
  4. The occipital lobe receives visual information and sends it to where it needs to be, it interprets things like colour, shape and distance.

If you damage the back of your head (occipital lobe) you would expect to have problems with vision and interpreting what you see.

If you damage the front of your brain, you may have problems controlling your emotions and behaviour.

Wesley House has trained staff that know how to best deal with these problems and focus on ways around the problems residents face.
